WANDA documents organizations created by women to advance women in the arts — bringing records dispersed across countries, decades and disciplines into one consultable, comparable and citable reference.
Every filter combination has its own permanent address, so a search can be bookmarked, shared with a colleague or cited in a paper — and still resolve years later.

02 — Browse
Every dot below is an organization documented by WANDA. Filter by UN region or decade of creation, and hover to inspect an individual record — the same combinable logic of the directory explorer. Left unfiltered, the corpus spells its own name.
03 — The record
A record is the standardized editorial entry created for each organization. Same structure, same vocabularies, same geographic authority — which is what makes 755 dispersed histories comparable without flattening any of them.

Geography, activities, funding model, year created and membership size cross freely, with full-text search on top. Every result set is one query away.
Each published record carries a permanent WANDA Record ID and a stable address. If a name changes editorially, the old address keeps resolving — citations do not rot.
Every record ends with a ready-made citation in WANDA's suggested format, and ships scholarly metadata for reference managers and search engines.
An empty field is never guessed or padded. The absence of a value is itself documented, and it reads the same way in the panel, on the website and in the API.
04 — Permanent URLs
Every combination of filters is an address, not a session. Toggle the facets below and watch the URL rebuild: that address can be bookmarked, mailed, footnoted or handed to the API, and it resolves to the same result set years from now.

WANDA (Women Artists' Networks · Directory & Archive) is an independent research initiative dedicated to documenting organizations created by women to advance women in the arts. By bringing organizations that have remained dispersed across countries, historical periods, and cultural contexts into a shared editorial reference, WANDA makes visible the broader ecosystem of women's collective organization in the arts.
Each organization reflects a specific local history. Documented within a consistent editorial methodology, these organizations become part of a structured reference that supports comparative research across places, historical periods, artistic disciplines, organizational forms, activities, and funding models — while preserving the history and specificity of each organization.
As a living editorial reference, WANDA will continue to grow as additional organizations are identified, documented, and incorporated through its editorial methodology.

Every record is created through the same path: identification, assessment, documentation, normalization and public source verification.

Geographic information follows the United Nations M49 standard — Region · Subregion · Country. Controlled vocabularies are applied to Activities and Funding to ensure consistency and support comparative research across countries and periods.

WANDA is conceived as a long-term editorial reference that will continue to grow through ongoing research. While every effort is made to identify organizations that satisfy WANDA's editorial criteria using publicly available documentation, the database is not intended to represent an exhaustive inventory of all organizations created by women for women in the arts.
The absence of organizations for a particular country does not indicate that no such organizations exist — it indicates only that no organization meeting WANDA's editorial criteria has yet been identified and verified through publicly available sources. Likewise, the absence of an individual organization should not be interpreted as evidence that it does not exist or does not satisfy the editorial criteria.
WANDA is intended to support research by providing a transparent and consistently documented editorial reference. As with any ongoing research project, the database reflects the current state of editorial knowledge and will continue to evolve as new information becomes available.
07 — Acknowledgements
WANDA was conceived and developed by Belén Millán, who continues to direct its research and editorial methodology.
Across both her artistic practice and research, Millán employs excavation as a methodology for identifying fragmented traces and bringing them into relation. While her artistic work investigates ecological systems transformed by human activity, WANDA documents organizations created by women to advance women in the arts. In both cases, the work is concerned with what emerges through aggregation: patterns and structures that no single record can reveal on its own.
Designed as a long-term editorial reference, WANDA will continue to grow alongside the organizations it documents, supporting future research on women's collective organization in the arts.

08 — Contribute
While the editorial team actively identifies and documents organizations, contributions from organizations, researchers, artists, and the wider public play an important role in expanding the reference and improving its documentation.
All submissions are independently assessed according to WANDA's editorial methodology and inclusion criteria before publication. Submission does not guarantee inclusion.
